We take the shelter testing process very seriously. Our goal is to surpass the testing parameters used at Texas Tech by 50%. Every F5 Storm Shelter design meets or exceeds FEMA 320, FEMA 361, and ICC 500.

All of our models have been designed in collaboration with a Professional Engineer (PE) to ensure a shelter that combines utility, cost efficiency, and above all-safety. F5 Storm Shelters currently has seven tested and certified storm shelter/safe room models and will be testing additional models in the near future. Testing took place at the Debris Impact Testing Laboratory at Texas Tech University. We stand by our quality and guarantees, setting the industry standard by exceeding our clients’ expectations and outperforming our competition.

Certification is often used as a catch phrase in the industry implying that a shelter has been tested and/or endorsed by one or more agencies and meets various guidelines set by said agencies. Some of these agencies include:  American Tornado Shelter Association (ATSA), National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA),Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Texas Tech University. However, it is important to note none of these organizations provide a “certification” for any product.

The use of the word certification should indicate that the shelter meets guidelines to withstand an EF5 tornado, specifically, the ICC-500FEMA 320, and FEMA 361 code requirements.  A way to ensure the shelter you are considering meets these guidelines is to verify the product has been tested at the Debris Impact Testing Laboratory at Texas Tech University or another reputable facility specializing in debris impact testing.  Testing encompasses a laser-guided missile from an air cannon at 250 plus mph, speeds equivalent to an EF5 tornado.  The missiles are directed at predetermined structurally vulnerable impact locations to ensure structural integrity.

All F5 Storm Shelter models have been designed in collaboration with a Professional Engineer (PE) as well as meet and exceed the guidelines including: ICC-500, FEMA 320 and FEMA 361. F5 Storm Shelters currently has three tested and certified storm shelter/safe room models and will be testing additional models shortly.  Based on our knowledge, we have the greatest number of tested and certified models in the industry.  Testing took place at the Debris Impact Testing Laboratory at Texas Tech University.  We stand by our quality and guarantees, setting the industry standard by exceeding our clients’ expectations and outperforming our competition.
